National Star

National Star is a specialist residential and day college of education working with more than 200 learners across multiple locations, with a wide range of special educational needs and disabilities. Some students at National Star have very complex physical disabilities and associated learning difficulties, Autism, profound and multiple learning difficulties, whereas others have more moderate learning needs, targeting a move into the world of employment.

We personalise and combine technologies for students, residents, and staff to enable them to achieve their aspirations.

For some students their goal is to engage in the world around them and or positively contributing to their community. For others, work is an achievable aspiration. National Star’s technology innovators work closely with each individual student to tailor off-the-shelf resources and adapt bespoke technology to suit their needs and/or the needs of the group.

A unique aspect of National Star is the way it integrates therapies (Speech and Language, Physiotherapy, Dramatherapy to name a few) into student’s personalised programmes. Highly trained and experienced specialists work together to meet the complex needs of students. Often technology solutions are trialled and tailored, to support a student throughout their time at college.

National Star through the EdTech Demonstrator programme can help schools and colleges engage within the SEND (Special Education Needs and Development) specialisms to use assistive technology in their environment.

Below is a simple example of where the EdTech Demonstrator programme through National Star can assist/advise further:

“A student at the school gate, struggles to leave their parent in the morning.  The student is identified by a member of staff as needing support engaging with the activities set for the day. The use of an App on a tablet providing a pictorial timetable pushing ‘Now and Next’ notifications can help to aid the everyday transition into school.” In this example, the member of staff has approached their line manager and identified the requirement to work with a SEND specialist provider through the EdTech Demonstrator programme.
